Celtic Christians often envisioned the Holy Spirit as a wild goose, instead of a gentle dove. I think it is good for us to make space or imagine other metaphors for God’s Spirit. God’s world can be harsh and exciting, and we are called to be a part of God’s “family of things.”
The month of May is full of activity at St. Luke. We start off May with a dynamic Music Sunday Worship Service on Sunday, May 5. We also welcome new members, present bibles to our high school seniors and have our second quarter congregational meeting.
May 12 is Mother’s Day. If you have the opportunity to attend church with your mom, I encourage you to do so. This Sunday is also special as we celebrate First Communion Sunday, and Second Grade Bible presentation.
May 19 is the day of the wild goose, the day we celebrate the Holy Spirit coming with fire and wind. Pentecost Sunday is a red color day on our liturgical calendar. So wear some red and be prepared for the untamed Holy Spirit to blow through.
May 24 is another windy experience, as we move outside for our annual outdoor worship service and church picnic. We will gather under our outdoor pavilion for worship and a meal. Please bring your favorite side dish to share. Hamburgers and hotdogs will be provided.
The month of May ends with our Southeastern Synod Assembly in Colombus, Ga. Our guest speaker will be a hero of mine, Bryan Stevenson, bestselling author of “Just Mercy” and founder of the Equal Justice Initiative in Alabama. If you have not read his book, I highly encourage you to do so.
Peace,
Pastor Cliff
