Good Steward Schedule (pdf)
Please feel free to contact our "Good Steward Coordinators”, Pam Dilg at stlukestewards@gmail.com, if you have any questions or if you would like to offer your time and talent in one of these areas.
Chief Steward - The "Captain" of the lay leaders. One Chief Steward is needed for each service. It is his/her responsibility to call their Good Stewards before Sunday to remind them of their responsibility and to help fill any vacancy that might occur. The 8:30 am Chief Steward arrives at least 30 minutes before the service, unlocks the doors, turns on lights and sets the thermostats. Both Chief Stewards ensure that all Good Stewards have arrived and arrange for someone to relieve our nursery staff while they take part in the communion service. The 11:00 am Chief Steward turns off all lights, resets the thermostats, makes a final walk through the kitchen and locks all doors. A final walk around the exterior of the church, checking doors, is recommended.
Assisting Minister - The assisting minister assists the pastor(s) with the liturgy. We have both singing and non-singing positions available. The assisting minister meets with the pastor(s) 15 minutes before the service to clarify the details of that worship service. Training is provided for this position.
Lector - One lector is required at each service to read the lessons. The only prerequisite is a clear speaking voice. A copy of the lessons is mailed to the lector several days before Sunday, to provide sufficient time for practice. On Sunday, the passages are provided and clearly marked at the lectern in large type for easy reading.
Greeters - Three greeters are needed for each service. They should arrive 20 minutes prior to the start of the service, wear a greeter badge (provided) with their name tag, and assume position; 2 by the narthex door and the 3rd by the guest table. Duties include warmly greeting all who arrive, encouraging visitors to sign the guest book and wear a guest name tag, provide a complimentary St. Luke gift to each of our 1st time visitors, and if possible, introduce visitors to pastor and/or other members.
Ushers - Two ushers are needed for each service. They are responsible for distributing worship bulletins and materials at the Sanctuary door, ensuring children's leaflets are accessible, collecting worship record sheets and offering, counting attendance, directing members during communion, and picking up loose papers and straightening pews at the end of the service. A head usher is assigned at each service. They are responsible for coordinating the ushers and taping the weekly communion service.
Acolyte - For 2nd graders and above. One acolyte is needed for each service. He/she lights candles, hands offering plates to ushers and assists with communion. Candlelight reminds us that Jesus is the Light of the World. Training is scheduled as needed.
Crucifer - For 4th graders and above. One crucifer is needed for each service. He/she carries the processional crucifix (cross) during the processional and assists with communion. The cross reminds us that the Holy Spirit is present during the service. We turn to follow the cross out at the end of the service reminding us to begin our service. Training is scheduled as needed.
Counters - Two counters are needed each Monday morning. They count and record all funds received in the Sunday offerings and prepare them for bank deposit. Instruction and training will be provided as additional members offer their time for this task.
Nursery - One youth (6th grade and above) and one adult are required to run the nursery during each service. Nursery staff who wish to participate in the communion service should inform the Chief Steward. When relieved for the communion service nursery staff may go directly to the altar and return to the nursery after partaking of communion. This is an ideal opportunity for our confirmands and high school students as well as for adults who enjoy spending time with our "Little Saints."
Communion Assistants - Two communion assistants are needed for each communion service. Both assist by carrying the wine and bread to the altar and pouring wine or passing the common cup. Our Contemporary Service at 8:30 am offers Communion by Intinction, two communion assistants will hold the wine.
Bread Baker - One bread baker is needed for each communion service to bake white or whole wheat bread for communion (packaged frozen bread dough or your favorite recipe can be used). Bread should be brought to your worship service and given to the assigned Altar Guild person or placed in the sacristy (the small room on the right front side of the nave). Flatbread is made/purchased and cut into small triangles for Communion by Intinction at our Contemporary Service.
Altar Guild - Altar Guild is a group of people who take turns being responsible for preparing the altar for worship, lighting the eternal candle, placing the flowers at the pulpit and behind the altar, setting up for communion and cleaning up afterward (this includes carefully laundering the linens used during communion). In addition, an Altar Guild maintenance person is scheduled each month to ensure altar instruments (chalice, bread plate, candlesticks, etc.) are cleaned and polished and that necessary supplies are restocked.
